WOODROW WILSON
Three weeks before leaving office, the President applauds Rev. Herbert Burk's plans for commemoration of Valley Forge.
Typed Letter Signed: "Woodrow Wilson" as 28th U.S. President, 1p, 7x8¾. The White House, Washington, 1921 February 11. To Rev. W. Herbert Burk, D.D., Valley Forge Historical Society, Valley Forge, Pa. In full: "Mrs. Wilson has shown me your letter to her of the tenth of February, and I write to say that what you propose in that letter is not only entirely agreeable to me, but I feel very much honored that it should have been suggested." 4 pinhead-size stains at lower blank margin. 2-inch vertical crease there. Erasure in upper right corner. Overall, fine condition. With the original postmarked White House envelope bearing 2-cent Washington stamp. Soiled, worn and creased. In 1903, Episcopalian minister Reverend W. Herbert Burk conceived a plan to commemorate the Valley Forge encampment and the American Revolution by establishing the first memorial honoring George Washington on land on which Washington's army encamped during the winter of 1777-1778. He began acquiring the objects and documents that became the nucleus for the Valley Forge Historical Society's collection. In 1909, the Society opened a public museum in the partially completed Washington Memorial complex at Valley Forge. This letter was written by President Wilson three weeks before his term ended. Two items.
