WOODROW WILSON
Woodrow Wilson sends a typed letter saying that he agrees with Professor Charles Bell with his assessment.
Typed Letter Signed: "Woodrow Wilson", 1p, 7¾x10¼. Princeton, N.J., 1901 March 28. To Professor Charles Bell Burke, Ithaca, N.Y. In full: "Your letter of the eighteenth has not waited ten days for an answer because it failed to interest me, but only because a rush of work thrust all correspondence on one side. I am very much interested indeed in what you say of Professor Corson, and certainly my own knowledge of his work corroborates your estimate of his quality and influence. The honour [sic] you suggest he has unquestionably merited; and I shall be glad to do all that I can to forward the suggestion here. Our Trustees do not meet until the end of the year, and it would hardly be feasible, I fear, to confer the degree next Commencement; but other equally dignified occasions offer themselves in our Autumn term. I have no authority in these matters, and I have not yet broached the matter to those who have; but I shall hope, with you, to see it go through. Allow me to thank you very warmly for what you say of my own work." CHARLES BELL BURKE was Professor of English at Cornell. WOODROW WILSON had been Professor of Jurisprudence and Political Economy at Princeton University since 1890. On June 9, 1902, he was unanimously elected President of Princeton, a position he held until becoming the Democratic nominee for Governor of New Jersey in 1910. Lightly stained. Folds do not touch signature. Creased upper right corner.
