WOODROW WILSON
Four months after the United States entered WWI, the President thanks
an American with an historic name for volunteering his services.
Typed Letter Signed: "Woodrow Wilson" as President, 1p,
7x8¾. The White House, Washington, 13 August 1917. To John C. Calhoun,
Hotel Powhatan, Washington, D.C. In full: "Your kind letter of August
ninth does you honor and you may be sure it is very much appreciated. It
happens, very much to the credit of the great country which we both love so
much, that a great many men of high capacity have offered their services as you
have offered yours and, unfortunately, it has frequently been impossible for me
to find anything that suited their gifts and wishes, but you may be sure that
the offers have been no less deeply appreciated." Although Wilson ran for
his second term on the campaign slogan "He kept us out of war", less than a
month after his second inauguration, on April 2, 1917, he asked Congress to
declare war. "The world", he said, "must be made safe for democracy." The United
States entered WWI four days later. Soiled and lightly creased at margins, heavy
ink type shows some smudging, chemical reaction of ink to paper at
"Wilson".
