WOODROW WILSON
The President, not yet converted to the cause of women's suffrage,
writes to a Republican woman active in the movement.
Typed Letter Signed: "Woodrow Wilson" as President, 1p,
7x9. The White House, Washington, 1916 December 5. To Hon. Charles S. Bird,
Executive Office, E. Walpole, Mass. In full: "May I not express to you my
warmest thanks for your generous message? It gave me the greatest satisfaction
to be so remembered." President Wilson had been reelected on November
7th. Mrs. Charles S. Bird was a Republican and later served as a
delegate to the 1924 Republican National Convention. Wilson, who had
previously opposed extending the vote to women, was reconsidering his
position at the time he wrote this letter. He reversed his stance in
1918, supporting what became the 19th Amendment to the US Constitution. Mrs.
Bird was an active supporter of the suffrage movement. Creased. Folds touch
signature. Paper clip rust stains at upper left. Nail head-size brown stain at
upper blank margin.
