1848: TAYLOR IN VIRGINIA
Presidential electors for Zachary Taylor.
Original campaign ticket, not signed, 1p, 4x5. Headed: "State of Virginia/People's Electoral Ticket --- 7th November, 1848./For President,/General Zachary Taylor, of Louisiana./For Vice President,/Millard Fillmore, of New York/For Electors of President and Vice President of/the United States". Seventeen Virginians are listed as candidates for electors. On verso is penned in an unidentified hand: "James Heaton/first/presidential vote". A souvenir of the first vote for President cast by Virginian James Heaton. Ironically, it was also the first time 63-year-old Zachary Taylor ever voted in a presidential election. Because he was a career soldier, he never stayed in one place long enough to qualify as a voter until 1847. The 17 Virginians listed were not elected. Democratic candidate Lewis Cass of Michigan won Virginia's popular vote and another slate of 17 electors pledged to Cass were elected. The Whig ticket of Taylor and Millard Fillmore defeated Democrats Cass and William O. Butler by 163-127 electoral votes, each winning 15 states. Stain on verso shows through as well as writing, else in fine condition.
