Fort Crawford, M.T. 1833 September 30. Initial report reads: "To Post Office Prairie du Chien For amt of postage on letters &c on public service for Qr Ending Sept. 30, 1833. 15.75", signed "L. P. Street/ast. P. M" . The future Mexican-American War hero and 12th U.S. President signs the certification "that the letters above charged for were received by me in the performance of my official duties, during the 3rd Quarter 1833." Receipt for $15.75 at bottom signed by Assistant Post Master S.P. Street. In 1830, Congress authorized the building of a military road from Chicago to Green Bay with a proposal in 1832 that it be extended to Prairie du Chien. Taylor's troops had the responsibility of cutting down steep hills, building bridges and constructing causeways. No information is available on Assistant Postmaster L. P. Street.
