PRESTON FOSTER
Foster signed this album leaf in 1938 with "Wooden Anchors", the working
title for his 1938 movie Submarine Patrol. This leaf was signed for Elsie
Myrus, wife of the mentalist Myrus, at one of her husband's shows.
Inscribed album leaf signed "Best Wishes to Elsie/Preston S.
Foster/'Wooden Anchors'/1938". 6x4½. "Wooden Anchors" was the working title
for the 1938 John Ford movie Submarine Patrol. Foster starred in this
movie as a demoted Navy officer who whips the misfit crew of a submarine chaser
into shape. This leaf is from the autograph collection of Elsie Myrus, who was
the wife of mentalist Myrus, "The Man with the X-Ray Eyes". She collected the
autographs of celebrities who attended her husband's shows. Foster
(1900-1970, born in Ocean City, New Jersey) was a stage, screen and
television actor. He appeared on Broadway (1928-1932) before making his
film debut in Pusher-in-the Face in 1929. A "he man" actor in Western
and action films in the 1930s and 1940s, Foster's credits include Doctor
X (1932), The All-American (1932), I Am a Fugitive from a Chain
Gang (1932), The Band Plays On (1934), The Last Days of
Pompeii (1935), Annie Oakley (1935), The Outcasts of Poker
Flat (1937), Geronimo (1939), Northwest Mounted Police (1940),
My Friend Flicka (1943), Guadalcanal Diary (1943), Tangier
(1946), Three Desperate Men (1951), The Time Travelers (1964) and
Chubasco (1968, his last film). He also appeared on several TV
series, from Cameo Theatre (1950) to 77 Sunset Strip (1964).
The multitalented Foster was also a composer, songwriter, guitarist and author.
His two best known songs are Good Ship Lalapaloo and Two
Shillelagh O'Sullivan. Lightly toned. Pinholes and adhesive residue from
album binding on left edge.
