PRICE DANIEL
Document fragment signed by Price Daniel in 1957, his first year as
Governor of Texas
Fragment signed: "Price Daniel" as Governor of Texas,
3½x1¾. 1957 September 27. Price Daniel (1910-1988) was a
Democrat United States Senator from Texas (1953-1957) and Governor of
Texas (1957-1963). Before being elected U. S. Senator, he was a member of
Texas State House of Representatives (1939-1943), where he was one of the
"Immortal 56" who opposed a state sales tax, and then, after
returning from service in the Pacific theatre of World War II, was state
Attorney General (1946-1953). As Attorney General, he defended the University
of Texas law school's refusal to admit Heman Marion Sweatt, a black postal
clerk, disbanded most of the state's organized gambling and defended
state ownership of its tidelands against federal encroachment. He was later
head of President Lyndon B. Johnson's Office of Emergency Preparedness and
served eight years on the Texas Supreme court. Lightly toned and bowed.
Discoloration at left and right edges, which touches signature. Adhesive residue
near bottom edge and on verso; show-through from verso touches signature.
Irregular edges at top, left and right. Otherwise, fine
condition.
