ARTHUR BALFOUR
Signed postcard photo, shown in 3-piece suit with cravat
Postcard Photograph signed: "Arthur James Balfour". Sepia, 3½x5½. Arthur J. Balfour (1848-1930) was a Member of Parliament for almost half a century (1874-1922). He was British Prime Minister from 1902-1905. While serving as Foreign Secretary (1916-1919), he made the Balfour Declaration (1917), declaring Britain in favor of "establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people" without prejudice to the civil and religious rights of non-Jewish communities there. Balfour favored a national homeland for the Jews but not for the Irish. As Chief Secretary for Ireland (1887) he worked to improve living conditions on that island but earned the moniker "Bloody Balfour" for suppression of political dissent. The ever polite but very reserved Balfour, a lifelong bachelor, inspired the adjective "Balfourian," defined by one wit as "complete detachment from the enthusiasms of the human race." Mounting residue on verso. Ink note (unknown hand) on verso. Toned. Corners creased. Bottom left corner chipped away. Otherwise, fine condition.
