6¼x7¾ album leaf signed during his invasion of Ethiopia.
Signature: "Benito Mussolini/Rome 19 January 1936" in Italian, 6¼x7¾ album leaf. Benito Mussolini (1883-1945) was Prime Minister of Italy from October 31, 1922 to July 25, 1943, when he was deposed by the Fascist Grand Council. Italy had invaded the African monarchy on October 3, 1935. Just one week before Mussolini signed this autograph, on January 12, 1936, a new Italian offensive was launched. Four months later, Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie, the Lion of Judah, fled his country. The capital, Addis Ababa, was captured on May 5, 1936. Mussolini annexed Ethiopia on May 9, 1936. His invasion of Ethiopia was carried out with a ruthless disregard for world opinion, including the use of poison gas. When the British and French leaders condemned him for these acts, he looked elsewhere for allies and found Germany and Japan. Toned. Paper scuffs below signature from removal of another page. Irregular left edge from removal from bound book. Lightly creased. otherwise, fine condition.
