Partly Printed DS: "Vittorio Emanuele" as King of Italy
and "B Mussolini" as Prime Minister, 1 page,
9¾x15. Rome, 1922 November 23. In Italian, not translated. Appointment of
Oscar Scarpa as Director of the Banca Nazionale in Port-au-Prince, Haiti.
VICTOR EMMANUEL III succeeded his father Umberto I, who was assassinated
in 1900, as King of Italy. On October 31, 1922, just 23 days before signing
this document, BENITO MUSSOLINI was asked by King Victor Emmanuel III to form a
government. Mussolini, Il Duce (The Leader) of the Fascists, took over a
number of ministries himself. He changed the electoral law to assure Fascist
control of government and, by 1925, openly instituted a dictatorship. Victor
Emmanuel III's role was that of a figurehead sovereign. Mussolini served as
Prime Minister of Italy until July 25, 1943, when he was deposed. Victor
Emmanuel III abdicated in favor of his son, Umberto II, in 1946 and died in
1947. Creased and lightly soiled. Lightly foxed. Nicked edges. 1½-inch
separation at mid-horizontal fold. Overall, fine condition.
