BENITO MUSSOLINI and KING VICTOR EMMANUEL III. Partly Printed DS: "Vittorio Emanuelle" as King of Italy andEmperor of Ethiopia and "Mussolini", 1p, 9½x14½. Rome, 1937 January 14. In Italian, not translated. VICTOR EMMANUEL III became King of Italy in 1900 upon the assassination of his father, Umberto I. In 1922, he asked MUSSOLINI to form a ministry and by 1925, he was reduced to a figurehead as Mussolini assumed dictatorial powers. Mussolini's power is evident in this document as he signed at the lower right, beneath the King, without any title. On May 9, 1936, eight months before this document was signed, Italy annexed Ethiopia, and Victor Emmanuel III replaced Haile Selassie (who had fled to French Somaliland) as Emperor of Ethiopia. File holes at blank left. Minor pinhead-size stains. Mid-horizontal fold. Slightly creased. Receipt stamp at upper margin. Slight tears (all intact) at file holes. Erased pencil notes (unknown hand) at lower blank area.
