BENITO MUSSOLINI and KING VICTOR EMMANUEL III
Both Italian leaders signed this 9½x14½ document
Document Signed: "Vittorio Emanuele" as King of Italy and "Mussolini" as Premier, 2 pages, 9½x14½, front and verso. January 18, 1934. In Italian, not translated. VICTOR EMMANUEL III (1869-1947) succeeded his father, Umberto I, after he was assassinated in 1900. BENITO MUSSOLINI (1883-1945), a member of the Italian Parliament, led a Fascist march on Rome in 1922. When the Cabinet resigned, Victor Emmanuel asked Mussolini to form a ministry. II Duce (The Leader) of the Fascists took over a number of ministries himself. He changed the electoral law to assure Fascist control of government and, by 1925, openly instituted a dictatorship. Victor Emmanuel III's role was that of a figurehead sovereign. One of his few responsibilities was to sign official documents such as the one offered here. It is interesting to note that just Mussolini's signature appears on the page the King has signed. Mussolini's name was not printed on the document nor is there an office listed, even though he was the Premier. Minor pinholes along left margin. Surface creasing. Lightly toned. Notes throughout in unknown hand. Otherwise, fine condition.
