DAVID BEN-GURION
Signed, handwritten letter in Hebrew debating interpretations of the Talmud: "You assume that Moses did not know Hebrew."
ALS: "D. Ben-Gurion" in Hebrew, 1 page, 5½x8 ruled sheet. Sdeh Boker, 1971 June 21. To Meir Ronen, Jerusalem. In full: "Peace and blessings. I know that the Talmud says that each woman gave birth to 6 babies, but they did not stay in Egypt and they did not examine each woman. About 'eye for an eye', you assume that Moses did not know Hebrew and instead of saying 'he will pay for it', he said an eye for an eye. But I don't need to prove to you that you are wrong." David Ben-Gurion, who proclaimed Israel's independence on May 14, 1948, was its first leader as Chairman of the Provisional State Council from May 14th to May 17, 1948, when he became Prime Minister and Chaim Weizmann became President. Ben-Gurion served from 1948-1953 and 1955-1963. Lightly creased with folds, light horizontal fold at first letter of signature. Minor paper loss at upper left edge, which has 1½- and ¾-inch tears at blank portion. "No. 9" stamped at upper blank margin. Overall, fine condition.
