DAVID BEN-GURION
Signed, handwritten letter in Hebrew (1968): "Peace will be insured if we succeed in getting high immigration from affluent countries."
ALS: "D. Ben-Gurion" in Hebrew, 1 page, 4½x8¼ ruled sheet. Sdeh Boker, 1968 July 10. To Meir Ronen, Jerusalem. In full: "Shalom. I agree with most of the things in your letter dated June 30, 1968, but I am not optimistic as you are that internal division will bring an external division. Peace will be insured if we succeed in getting high immigration from the affluent countries." David Ben-Gurion, who proclaimed Israel's independence on May 14, 1948, was its first leader as Chairman of the Provisional State Council from May 14th to May 17, 1948, when he became Prime Minister and Chaim Weizmann became President. Ben-Gurion served from 1948-1953 and 1955-1963. In the 1970 census, there were 2.5 million Jews in Israel. In 2000, the Jewish population in Israel was 6.3 million, up from 3.9 million in 1990. Thin paper. Lightly creased with folds, light horizontal fold at flourish of signature. Lower left blank corner cut away, perforated right edge. "38" stamped at upper left margin. Fine condition.
