David Ben-Gurion wrote this letter in Hebrew in 1963, less than three
months after resigning as Prime Minister of Israel, to say that he can't answer
a letter because it's handwritten in English.
Autograph letter signed "David" in Hebrew in blue ink. 1 page,
4¾x8¼, ruled paper, with "8" printed in upper left corner. Nov. 11, 1963.
Written to an unidentified "Chaim". Written in Hebrew, translated
in part: "I can't answer [the letter]... The pages are handwritten
in English, and I have no copy of it. I assume that it is in Mr. Applebaum's
office. Anyway, Sid must know... and he will answer you...". Israel became
independent on May 14, 1948. On that day, Ben-Gurion (1886-1973, born
David Gruen in Plonsk, Poland, once part of the Russian Empire) became the
Chairman of the Provisional State Council, a post he held until May 17th,
when Chaim Weizmann became Head of the Council and Ben-Gurion became Prime
Minister. Ben-Gurion was Israeli Prime Minister from May 17, 1948 to December
7, 1953 and from November 2, 1955 to June 21, 1963. "Time" magazine called
him "part Washington, part Moses...the architect of a new nation". Lightly toned
andcreased. Pen dribbled while writing handwriting but not signature.
Two binder holes at left edge, which touch handwriting. Rounded corners. Folded
once vertically and twice horizontally and unfolded. Otherwise in fine
condition.
