Autograph Letter signed: "D. Ben-Gurion", 1 page, 4½x8¼. On lined note pad to Sid Appelbaum, 1963 September 30. In Hebrew, translated: "Could Dr. Lawless come here on Friday 9 October 10 o'clock in the morning?" Israel became independent on May 14, 1948. On that day, Ben-Gurion (1886-1973, born David Gruen in Plonsk, Poland, once part of the Russian Empire) became the Chairman of the Provisional State Council, a post he held until May 17th, when Chaim Weizmann became Head of the Council and Ben-Gurion became Prime Minister. Ben-Gurion was Israeli Prime Minister from May 17, 1948 to December 7, 1953 and from November 2, 1955 to June 21, 1963. "Time" magazine called him "part Washington, part Moses...the architect of a new nation". Ben-Gurion remained politically active, breaking with the governing Mapai Party in 1964 and leading smaller movements in the Knesset until 1970. 1 vertical 1 horizontal fold creases through center. 2 punch holes in right edge.
