Signed 21x17 lithograph framed in the Gallery of History style to 40x26.
Printed Image signed in ink: "D. Ben-Gurion" at lower margin. Color, 21½x17 overall, image 19¾x14¾ (one surface). Lithograph from a painting by artist Herbert Lawrence Davidson. The original, reportedly donated shortly after completion to the Bezalel Museum in Israel, was painted in the final year of Ben-Gurion's life. In May 1948, after the State of Israel was proclaimed, David Ben-Gurion (1886-1973) was elected by the Israeli Parliament as the country's first Prime Minister and Minister of Defense. As Prime Minister, Ben-Gurion encouraged mass immigration from throughout the world and the settlement of desert lands. He retired as Prime Minister in 1953, but returned in 1955, serving until his second retirement in 1965. Ben-Gurion remained politically active until 1970, when he retired to write his memoirs. David Gruen had immigrated to Palestine from Poland in 1906 at age 20, adopting the ancient Hebrew name Ben-Gurion. He had been fascinated with Zionism from an early age and became a proponent for the revival of a Jewish nation in Palestine. Ben-Gurion encouraged immigration, believing it to be the most important step toward Jewish political independence in their own national home. When the confederation of Jewish workers in Palestine was formed in 1920, Ben-Gurion became the first Secretary General and worked toward the goal of independence, which was realized on May 14, 1948. For his leadership, Ben-Gurion was called the "Father of the Nation". Fine condition. Framed in the Gallery of History style: 40½x26.
