He signs a rich content, typed letter to a Knesset member about kibbutz youth volunteering for the army.
Typed Letter Signed: "D. Ben=Gurion" in Hebrew, 1 page, 6¼x7½. Sdeh-Boker, Israel, 1954 January 11. With English translation. To Shlomo Lavie, Member of the Knesset, Kibbutz Ein-Harod. In full: "The Kibbutz is the most wondrous thing that has happened to our people insofar as the effect it has had on our youth movements from the beginning, yet without its members volunteering for the army, many arguments and problems will ensue. The Israel Defense Forces requires volunteers over and above what is necessary according to law, and there are those from the Kibbutz movement who have proven themselves in Yehiam, Degania, Gesher, Mishmar-Haemek and other places. Even if the entire land would be fully settled, and our population would increase many-fold, we will still need an army, and the army requires years of dedication, and therefore I do not sin if I say, the finest hour has arrived for Kibbutz sons." David Ben-Gurion (1886-1973), who became known as "The Father of Israel", became captivated with Zionism during his youth in Poland. Born David Gruen, he adopted the ancient Hebrew name Ben-Gurion in 1906 at age 20, when he immigrated to Palestine. Ben-Gurion, who proclaimed Israel's independence on May 14, 1948, was its first leader as Chairman of the Provisional State Council (May 14-May 17, 1948). On May 17, he became Israel's first Prime Minister (1948-1953) and Chaim Weizmann became President. Ben-Gurion devoted his life to establishing a Jewish nation, and encouraged the return of Jewish people from throughout the world. After serving again as Prime Minister from 1955-1963, Ben-Gurion devoted himself to writing. He published Israel: The Years of Challenge (1963) and The Jews in Their Land (1966). "Time" magazine called him "part Washington, part Moses...the architect of a new nation". At the lower right it is noted that a copy of this letter was sent to Prime Minister Moshe Sharett. Lightly creased. Nicked at top of mid-vertical fold. 2 file holes at blank right margin. Overall, fine condition.
