DAVID BEN-GURION
As Prime Minister, he signs an angry letter to a member of the Knesset
concerning a new, "apolitical settlement" at Lachich.
TLS: "D. Ben-Gurion" as Prime Minister in Hebrew, 1 page, 6x7¾.
Jerusalem, 1956 February 1. To Knesset Member Meir Ya'ari, Kibbutz
Merhavia (Israel). In full: "Again you have found it necessary to
attack government policies in your newspaper 'Al Hamishmar' with respect to the
apolitical settlement at Lachish. It is certainly beyond my understanding, what
is the 'great tragedy' that new immigrants from twenty different countries (some
of whom never had any political education), will become farmers and their own
bosses in our own free country. Your attacks are without any responsibility and
are to be condemned." BEN-GURION was Israel's first Prime Minister,
serving from 1948-1953 and 1955-1963. MEIR YA'ARI was the leader of the
Zionist Young Guard in Palestine before Israeli independence in 1948 and a
member of the Israeli parliament, the Knesset, since independence. He was also
the leader of the Mapam political party, a leftist pro-Marxist essentially
Kibbutz movement, publishers of "Al Hamishmar", a daily Israeli newspaper.
Lachish, about 25 miles south of Jerusalem, is the location of some of Israel's
most important archaeological discoveries. Folds, vertical fold touches paraph
of signature. Lightly soiled at blank areas. 2 file holes at blank right margin.
Overall, fine condition.
