Israel's Prime Minister writes to poet Nathan Alterman regarding his pleasure in reading one of Alterman's poems, which Ben-Gurion feels "is a valuable asset to the State and to the Army."
TLS: "D. Ben-Gurion" as Prime Minister of Israel, 1p, 6x8. Jerusalem, 1956 April 28. In Hebrew, translated. On imprinted sheet to poet Nathan Alterman, Tel-Aviv. In full: "I will not (not translated) you on our efforts to ensure the necessary armaments to the army. In the past months, we have witnessed rumblings from our neighbors, the Arabs, and it is my hope that in the future we will have many days of pleasant discussions. It is also important to tell you that your readings which have been published in 'Davar' under the heading 'and it shall be told' has given me one of the greatest pleasures of recent days and I feel that this poem is a valuable asset to the State and to the Army. With Greetings." DAVID BEN-GURION was Israel's first Prime Minister, serving from 1948-1953 and 1955-1963. Born in Warsaw, Poland, NATHAN ALTERMAN (1910-1970) settled in Tel-Aviv in 1925. His first poems were published in 1931 and his first book, Stars Outside, was published in 1938. Alterman was a regular contributor of political verse to the daily "Ha'aretz", and later to the Labor Party daily, "Davar". A poetic spokesmen for the national struggle, many of his poems were banned by the British Mandate authorities and were passed from hand to hand by an eager public. After 1948, social and political themes became the dominant feature in Alterman's public verse. The recipient of both the Israel Prize and the Bialik Prize, his poems have been translated into twenty languages. Creased. Two file holes at blank right margin. Fine condition.
