DAVID BEN-GURION
He signs a 9-page typed account of events leading up to the 1956 Suez
War. A manuscript of historical interest!
Typescript signed: "D. Ben-Gurion" on last page, 9 pages,
8x11. Titled: "At Bay". Recounts the events leading up to the 1956 Suez
War, in which Israel won a speedy victory over Egypt. The text emphasizes the
threat posed to Israel by its Arab neighbors and the ineffectiveness of the
United Nations in forestalling that threat. On the day that Israel declared
independence, May 14, 1948, David Ben-Gurion (1886-1973) became the
Chairman of the Provisional State Council, a post he held until May 17th,
when Chaim Weizmann became Head of the Council and Ben-Gurion became Prime
Minister. Ben-Gurion was Israeli Prime Minister from May 17, 1948 to December
7, 1953 and from November 2, 1955 to June 21, 1963. "Time" magazine called
him "part Washington, part Moses...the architect of a new nation".
Vertical fold touches "D" of signature. Ink stamp on verso shows through
faintly, touching final "n" of signature. Overall, fine
condition.
