EDWARD HEATH
The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom pens his autograph on this business card, in
black ink
Printed Card Signed In Ink: “Edward Heath” in black ink. 4½x3½. Sir Edward Richard
George Heath (1916-2005) was a Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1970 to
1974 and Leader of the Conservative Party from 1965 to 1975. In 1971 he signed the
treaty bringing Britain into the European Community and resigned as Prime Minister
after trying in vain to form a coalition with the Liberal Party; regardless losing a second
general election in October that year, Heath vowed to continue as leader of his party. In
February 1975, however, his former Education Secretary Margaret Thatcher challenged
and defeated Heath to win the leadership. After his return to the backbenches, he became an
active critic of Thatcher's policies as leader and, from 1979, as Prime Minister. Heath
remained a backbench MP until retiring in 2001, serving as the Father of the House for his
last nine years in Parliament. In August 2015 police started investigating multiple claims of
historic child sexual abuse by Heath. Lightly toned and worn. Tape residue at upper middle
margin. Pen notations on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
