The Prime Minister of Spain sends letter to an admirer, signs name in
black ink
Typed letter signed: "Felipe Gonzalez" in black ink. 1 page,
8¼x11¾. Written on personal PSOE letterhead. Madrid, Spain. June 1, 2001. In
full (roughly translated): "Dear friend, In reply to your letter of last
April, I am glad to attach the photo that I've signed, as you have asked. Yours
sincerely". Felipe Gonzalez (b. 1942) is a Spanish
social-democratic politician who served as the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party
(PSOE) from 1974 to 1997, and to this day is the country's longest-serving Prime
Minister, after serving four successive mandates from 1982-1996. His tenure
is seen as the last step in the path to Spain's re-installment of democracy
which commenced with the death of dictator Francisco Franco in 1975. After
losing to the Partido Popular party candidate Jose Maria Aznar in 1996, Gonzales
continued to lead the PSOE, but was ousted following controversy regarding
illegal actions his government had taken in the struggle against the ETA, an
armed Basque nationalist and separatist organization. He is a member of the
famed Club of Madrid, a non-profit organization composed of 89 former Presidents
and Prime Ministers from 58 different countries. Normal mailing folds. Light
surface creases. Corners creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
