PRIME MINISTER GARRET FITZGERALD
This 6½x8½ photograph of the Irish Prime Minister is signed in blue
ink
Photograph signed: "Garret Fitzgerald". B/w, 6½x8½. Garret
FitzGerald (1926-2011) was Taoiseach (Prime Minister) of Ireland from
1981-1982 and 1982-1987. He was the son of Desmond FitzGerald, the first
Minister for External Affairs of the Irish Free State following independence in
1922. FitzGerald made his entry into party politics under the banner of Fine
Gael, Ireland's middle-right political party. He was elected to Seanad Éireann
by the Industrial and Commercial Panel in 1965 and soon built up his political
profile. FitzGerald was elected Taoiseach on 30 June 1981 and then again in
1982 when he served in that position until 1987. As Taoiseach for a second
time FitzGerald advocated a liberalization of Irish society, to create what he
called the non-sectarian nation of "Tone and Davis". His attempt to introduce
divorce was defeated in a referendum, although he did liberalize Ireland's
contraception laws. After retiring from his political position FitzGerald
wrote a weekly column every Saturday in The Irish Times, and lectured
widely at home and abroad on public affairs. Slightly creased. Horizontal fold
at the "G" of Garret. Light paper clip impression at upper margin. Typed notes
on verso (no show through).
