HAROLD WILSON
The former Prime Minister, signing here as a Lord, writes to an Australian.
Typed Letter signed: "Wilson of Rievaulx", 1 page, 8¼x11. No place, 1990 June 8. On personal letterhead to Henry Slapinski, Melbourne, Australia. In full: "Thank you for your letter of the 21st May. It was very kind indeed of you to think of sending to me the beautiful First Day cover to honor the Queen's birthday. I was delighted to have it and will keep it with care and pleasure. May I take the opportunity of sending my warmest good wishes to you and your family and express the affection and admiration we all feel here for Australia. Yours sincerely". James Harold Wilson (1916-1995) was British Prime Minister from 1964-1970 and 1974-1976. Wilson, who entered Parliament in 1945, became a member of the Cabinet as President of the Board of Trade (1947-1951). During the 1950s, he was the Labour Party's spokesman for foreign affairs and finance, although his terms as Prime Minister were hampered by financial woes. In 1983, Wilson was made a life peer by Queen Elizabeth II and entered the House of Lords as Lord Wilson of Rievaulx. Normal mailing folds. Slightly creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
