JAMES CALLAGHAN
TLS as Chancellor of the Exchequer, the first of the four key offices he held, written from his home next door to the Prime Minister's residence (where he would move 10 years later).
Typed Letter signed: "Jim Callaghan" as Chancellor of the Exchequer, 1p, 6x9½. 11 Downing Street, Whitehall, 1966 February 17. To Esther Home, Eastbourne, in full: "Many thanks for your letter, and although you say it needs no reply, I just wanted to thank you for your encouragement and support. Yours sincerely". James "Jim" Callaghan (1912-2005) was Foreign Secretary in the Labor Government of Harold Wilson, renegotiating the terms of Britain's EC membership. He served as Prime Minister 1976-1979. Callaghan's loss to Margaret Thatcher in the 1979 general election was part of the conservative wave which crested when Ronald Reagan replaced Jimmy Carter in the US Presidency the following year. Callaghan is the only person to have served in all four of Britain's Great Offices of State: Prime Minister, Chancellor of the Exchequer (1964-1967), Home Secretary (1967-1970) and Foreign Secretary (1974-1976). The Chancellor of the Exchequer, Britain's chief financial officer, lives next door to the Prime Minister's residence - 10 Downing Street. Lightly creased. Tape remnants on verso (light show through at margins).
