JAN CHRISTIAN SMUTS. Autograph Letter signed: "JC Smuts", 1p, 4½x7. Oxford, England, 1929 October 23. To My dear Harry". In full: "It will be great fun coming on Monday night, and I have that night free luckily. I shall be at 65 Wyh [?] St. at 6.45". JanChristian Smuts (1870-1950) was an influential writer and effective military commander in the Afrikaner resistance to British rule in South Africa, the Boer War (1899-1902). Thereafter, he opposed extreme Afrikaner nationalism and urged reconciliation. He was instrumental in the formation of the Union of South Africa (1910), and served for two long periods as its Prime Minister (1919-1924, 1939-1948). Smuts was influential beyond the boundaries of South Africa. During World War I he successfully commanded British troops against the Germans in East Africa. Then he joined the Imperial War Cabinet. He was the only man to sign the peace treaties ending both World Wars, the first one reluctantly because he foresaw that its harsh treatment of Germany would lead to another war. He was also instrumental in the founding of both the League of Nations and the United Nations. When he wrote this letter, Smuts was on a tour of England and America. Lightly soiled. Otherwise, fine condition.
