PRIME MINISTER JAN C. SMUTS (SOUTH AFRICA) - AUTOGRAPHED SIGNED PHOTOGRAPH CIRCA 1946 - HFSID 167889
Price: $500.00
JAN C. SMUTS. Photograph signed: "J C Smuts/FM" and
by an Indian diplomat. B/w, 5½x6. Smuts is depicted filling wine glasses as an
unidentified Indian diplomat looks on. Caption on verso, in French, indicates
that this photograph was taken on August 24, 1946 at the Paris Peace
Conference. The conference was held from July 29 to October 15, 1946. At the
conference, South Africa and India were elected chairmen of the Political and
Economic Commissions, so it is possible the two leaders are celebrating their
election. Jan Christiaan Smuts (1870-1950) was Prime Minister of South
Africa from 1919-1924 and 1939-1948. The 1946 Paris Peace Conference
resulted in 1947 peace treaties between the victorious WWII allies (principally
the U.S., UK, France and USSR) and their lesser WWII enemies: Italy, Romania,
Hungary, Bulgaria and Finland. Slightly creased. Fine condition.
