envelope #0760 in a printing of 1,000. Laurent Fabius (b. 1946), a
graduate of France's most elite schools, including "Sciences Po", was elected to
the National Assembly in 1978. After the Socialist Party took power in 1981,
Fabius became Minister of the Budget, Minister of Industry under President
Mitterand, and then the youngest Prime Minister (1984-1986) in the history of
Frances' Fifth Republic. Fabius promoted a new style of French socialism which
embraced the market economy. He became President of the National Assembly in
1988, but resigned after his Party's landslide defeat in the 1993 elections. He
broke with his Party temporarily by opposing the European Constitution, a
proposal defeated when it lost referendum votes in France and the Netherlands.
Returning to the National Assembly in 2007, he became Foreign Minister in the
government of François Holland in May 2012. Fine
