MENACHEM BEGIN
Menachen Begin sends a typed letter of thanks for the get well
wishes.
Typed Letter Signed: "M. Begin" in English as Prime
Minister of Israel, 1p, 6½x8¼. Jerusalem, 1981 December 23. To Mrs.
R.E. Boden, Columbus, Georgia. In full: "I thank you from the heart
for your kind get-well message. I am now home, putting in a good day's work and
hope to be back on my feet and at my desk - soon. With every good wish."
Begin became Prime Minister in 1977. In 1978, Begin and Egyptian President Anwar
Sadat received the Nobel Peace Prize for the peace treaty they would sign the
following year, after much of the Sinai was returned to Egypt. Six months
before this letter, in June 1981, Begin asked his cabinet to approve the bombing
of an Iraqi nuclear reactor at Osirak. Israeli planes flew below radar
detection through Arab airspace and destroyed the facility, which Israel later
claimed had been primed for a start up. In 1982, he authorized the Israeli
invasion of Lebanon. In failing health and following the death of his wife,
Aliza, Begin stepped down in September 1983. Fine
condition.
