NGUYEN CAO KY
Signature of the former South Vietnamese general and Premier
Signature: "Nguyen Cao Ky/Viet Nam", 5x3 index card. Nguyen Cao Ky (b. 1930) was a flamboyant South Vietnamese air force general before entering the political arena. In 1965, after two years of military coups, Ky became Premier. He wanted to run for President in 1967 in the freest election Vietnam ever had, but was persuaded to accept the Vice Presidential nomination under Nguyen Van Thieu. Ky and Thieu were bitter rivals, and Ky left politics when Thieu ran for re-election in 1971. Ky claimed to be a reformer fighting corruption, and did prosecute some corrupt figures, but there were widespread allegations of misdeeds by him, including involvement in the opium traffic. Having fled Vietnam following the communist victory in 1975, he risked criticism from the Vietnamese émigré community by returning to Vietnam in 2004, vowing to take up residence in Vietnam again and to help it win foreign investment. Ink note (unknown hand) on verso (no show-through). Fine condition.
