Clipped Signature: "Pierre M.France", attached to clippings of a typed letter sent from the Prime Minister to a constituent. Entire document 4¼x5. Dated November 16, 1954.Letter In Full (translated from French): "Thank you very much for / your kind letter of November 2. / I hastened to respond / to the what you wanted from me, and / I send you an autograph that / you will find attached. / Believe me, dear sir, I send my highest regards". Pierre Mendes-France (1907-1982) was Prime Minister of France from June 18, 1954 to February 23, 1955.He became Prime Minister after the French defeat in Dien Bien Phu, Vietnam and the government PM Joseph Laniel resigned. At the 1954 Geneva Conference, he arranged the armistice that halted the fighting in Indochina. He also helped bring about the formation of the Western European Union and he proposed far-reaching economic reform. His cabinet fell in 1955 on the issue of his liberal North African policy. Politically, he favored the gradual independence of the French colonies, including Tunisia, Morocco, and Algeria. Before his reign as Prime Minister, Mendes France served as a member of the Free French forces of Charles de Gaulle during WWII and later became the French leader's Minister for National Economy in the provisional French government after the liberation of Paris.
