RAYMOND POINCARÉ
During his final term as French Prime Minister, he responds to
comment on the fourth volume of his memoirs.
Autograph Letter signed: "Poincaré" as President of the
Council of Ministers, 1 page, 5½x3¾. No place, 1927 October 4. In
French, loosely translated, to "My dear friend". He sends thanks for
a letter, and asks about popular reaction to the fourth volume of his memoirs
("my 4th volume"). Raymond Poincaré (1860-1934), French Premier
and Foreign Minister in 1912, served as President of France from 1913-1920.
After World War I, Poincaré called for harsh punishment of Germany and for
adequate guarantees of French security. He regarded the Treaty of
Versailles as too lenient. Poincare returned to power as Prime Minister
in 1922, serving until 1924. He once again was brought back to power in 1926 and
served as both Prime Minister and Minister of Finance. France enjoyed
economic prosperity during this term of office and he was a popular leader until
ill health forced him to resign in July 1929. Lightly toned. Pencil note
(unknown hand) on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
