PRIME MINISTER WILLIAM H. C. BENTINCK (GREAT BRITAIN)
Clipped signature as Home Secretary
Clipped signature: "Portland" as Home Secretary, 3½x2, Clipped from a manuscript document bearing the phrases "1795/Majesty's Command". William H. C. Bentinck (1738-1809) succeeded his father as Duke of Portland in 1762. Under King George III, the 3rd Duke of Portland was British Prime Minister (April to December, 1783; 1807-1809), Home Secretary (1794-1801) and Lord President of the Council (1801-1805). He also served as Vice President of London's famed Foundlings Hospital, dedicated to the care of abandoned children. Bentinck was something of a figurehead Prime Minister in governments dominated by stronger personalities. His government, however, approved the Treaty of Paris (September 3, 1983), which recognized the independence of the United States. Soiled and toned. Creased. Heavy mounting residue on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
