California wrestling license with his enormous thumb prints, signed the year he became the only man ever to have won world heavyweight titles in both boxing and wrestling
Document signed: "Primo Carnera" on verso, 2 pages (front and verso), 8½x13. Sacramento, California, 1957 January 3. Athletic Commission of California Wrestler's License, with address and other personal data hand printed by Carnero. His 1½x2 b/w photo is affixed in upper left corner with 4 staples, and his (enormous) left and right thumb prints are present at bottom on verso. (There is a third, smudged, print.) Primo Carnera (1906-1967) was World Heavyweight Boxing Champion from 1933-1934. The enormous Carnera, called "the Ambling Alp", stood 6'5", weighted 265 pounds, and had enormous hands. He won the title by knocking out Jack Sharkey in the sixth round in Madison Square Garden on June 29, 1933. He lost the title on June 14, 1934 in Madison Square Garden when he was knocked out by Max Baer in the 11th round, and was crushed by Joe Louis the next year. Abused and cheated first by mob-connected managers and then by Nazi occupiers of his Italian village during World War II, Carnera made an astonishing comeback as a professional wrestler (1946-1961), going 152-14-19 and being declared world champion. He became a US citizen in 1953. Carnera appeared in a few films, including The Prizefighter and the Lady (1933), in which he fought Max Baer, his real life ring opponent the next year. Red pencil notes (unknown hand) at upper right margin and red ink date stamp (Jan 12 1957) at lower right section. 2 filing holes at upper margin. Minor show through of finger prints to front. Corners lightly worn. Otherwise, fine condition.
