PRINCE FREDERICK AUGUSTUS (DUKE OF YORK and ALBANY)
The second son of King George III signs this envelope in 1816
Autograph Envelope signed: "York & Albany", 4½x2¾. Dated ("September 15, 1816") and addressed in another hand to Major General Sir Benjamin Bloomfield, Hampton Court. FREDERICK AUGUSTUS, DUKE OF YORK AND ALBANY (1763-1827), was the second son of King George III and Commander in Chief of his Majesty's forces. His older brother became King George IV, and his niece became Queen Victoria. He commanded the forces sent to assist the allied armies in 1793. Named commander-in-chief of the British Army, he served in that capacity from 1798 to 1809, leading the British troops during the Napoleonic Wars. Many poked fun at his initial ineffectiveness in commanding the British Armies in the rhyme "The Grand Old Duke of York". However, he eventually instituted many important reforms to the structure and administrative organization of the British forces. SIR BENJAMIN BLOOMFIELD was later created a Peer and, as Lord Bloomfield, was sent to Stockholm as British Ambassador. Lightly soiled, stain touches 3 words of address. Pencil notes (unknown hand) and mounting remnants on verso, light show-through at corners. Lightly creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
