Autograph Letter Signed: "Frederick Karl" ¼p, 7½x9½. Berlin, January 2, 1877. In German,
not yet translated. Prince Frederick Karl (1828-1885) was the son of Prince Charles of
Prussian and Princess Marie of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach. He served with distinction
throughout both the Austro-Prussian War and the Franco-Prussian War. During the
Austro-Prussian War, he served valiantly, commanding the First Army. At the onset of the
Franco-Prussian War, the Prince took up command of the Second Army and is
well-remembered for his leadership at the Battle of Spicheren, as well as the battles of
Vionville-Mars la Tour and Gravelotte-St. Privat, and the aftermath of the Siege of Metz. He
was created an honorary Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath in 1878. Toned.
Sparse staining throughout, most of which is concentrated at edges. Vertical and horizontal
folds. Otherwise, fine condition.
