PRINCE GEORG OF DENMARK
Letter signed as Denmark's Defense Attaché in London, responding to a letter of sympathy following the assassination of Lord Montbatten.
Typed Letter signed: "Georg of Denmark", 1 page, 6x9. London, 1979 October 8. On his letterhead as Defense Attaché, Royal Danish Embassy to Paul Hanley, West Orange, New Jersey. In full: "Thank you so much for your letter of sympathy on the occasion of the tragic death of Lord Louis Montbatten not so long ago. I am deeply grateful for your kind message. Yours sincerely". Prince Georg of Denmark (1920-1986), a member of the Danish royal family and a grandson of Kings of both Denmark and Sweden, was Denmark's Defense Attaché in Paris and later in London. Until 1944, when Iceland severed its links to the Danish monarchy and became a republic, Georg was Prince of Denmark and Iceland. The Prince's spouse, Princess Anne of Denmark, was a member of the British royal family, a cousin of Queen Elizabeth II. This family tie explains why the Danish Prince was receiving a letter of sympathy following the death of British statesman and military leader, the Earl Montbatten, assassinated by the Provisional wing of the Irish Republican Army on August 27, 1979. Horizontal crease through center. Edges lightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
