PRINCE LOUIS FERDINAND OF PRUSSIA
The heir to the (abolished) German monarchy is shown with his own son and heir, viewing a portrait of Kaiser Wilhelm II. Signed and accompanied by a printed German sentiment from his imperial secretariat
Photograph signed: "Louis Ferdinand," in blue felt tip. B/w, 6x4. Accompanied by a typed sentiment signed by Ferdinand's Secretariat (in German, translated): "On behalf of His Imperial Highness Prince Louis Ferdinand of Prussia/The Secretariat," signed, (in German, translated), "Mit freundlichen Grussen [with friendly greetings]." The name of the Secretariat is illegible. Louis Ferdinand, Prince of Prussia (1907-1994), the grandson of the last ruling German Emperor, Kaiser Wilhelm II, became the pretender to the German throne upon the death of his own father, Crown Prince William, in 1951. Not pursuing the military career typical of his family, Louis Ferdinand traveled widely, even living for a time in Detroit, where he became a friend of Henry Ford and developed a keen interest in engineering. A staunch anti-Nazi, Louis Ferdinand was excluded from positions of importance, political or industrial, by Hitler. Louis Ferdinand's two oldest sons renounced any claim on the throne; his third son died in 1977. Therefore the youth pictured with his father, Georg Friedrich (b. 1976), succeeded him as head of the House of Hohenzollern and pretender to the German throne in 1994. Signature in poor contrast, but legible. Fine condition.
