AMÉLIE RIVES TROUBETZKOY
The author and scandalous celebrity signs with her single name, Amelie
Rives
Autograph Sentiment signed: "Yours sincerely,/Améle Rives", 3¾x2½.
Author and painter Amélie Rives Troubetzkoy (1863-1945) published a steamy
novel, The Quick or the Dead? in 1889, and became an overnight
sensation with friends like Henry James and Oscar Wilde. That same year she
wed Astor heir Archie Chanler, beginning a very stormy 7-year marriage
described in a recent dual biography by Donna M. Lucey, Archie and Amelie:
Love and Madness in the Gilded Age (2007). After divorcing the nearly as
colorful Chanler, who made a bold escape from the insane asylum to which his
family had committed him, Rives married impoverished Russian Prince Pierre
Troubetzkoy, a society painter. Lightly toned. Mounting residue on verso.
Fine condition.
