Brooker, Wilson and Copping were also bandmates in the group The Paramounts before Procol Harum was formed. PROCOL HARUM (supposedly the name of a cat) is an English rock band best known for their song A Whiter Shade of Pale, released on 1967's Procol Harum. The song hit No. 1 on the UK charts and peaked at No. 5 on the American charts. The band broke up in 1977, but reformed in 1991 and is still recording. Procol Harum has released 16 albums, their latest (as of this biography) being 2007's Secrets of the Hive. BROOKER, born in 1945, is an English pianist, singer and songwriter and the founder of Procol Harum with poet and songwriter Keith Reid. He founded the band in 1966 and headed it until it broke up in 1977. He has also played with Eric Clapton and Alan Parsons and toured with Ringo Starr's All-Starr Band. WILSON (1947-1990), also known as "B.J.", was Procol Harum's original drummer and one of the few members to stay with the band from its inception to its breakup in 1977. He also played with Frankie Miller and AC/DC and toured with Joe Cocker, and he was the drummer on the movie soundtrack of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. COPPING, born in 1945, is an English organist who also played bass until the addition of Cartwright. He joined in 1969, replacing Matthew Fisher on organ and David Knights on bass, and stayed until its breakup. He moved to Australia in 1978, where he continues to record, work with other musicians and work on soundtracks for short movies. CARTWRIGHT, born in 1945, is an English bassist who joined the band in 1972, which allowed Copping to concentrate on the organ. He recorded Procol Harum Live with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra (1972) and stayed with the band long enough to record Procol's Ninth (1975). He runs a bar as of this biography. BALL, born in 1950, is an English guitar player who joined Procol Harum in 1972, replacing guitarist Robin Trower. He recorded Procol Harum Live with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra and Grand Hotel (1973) with the band, but left during the recording of Grand Hotel. He lives in New Zealand as of this biography.
