Dated August 7, 1964. Partially printed appointment, 21x16. In Part: "Whereas it appears to Us expedient to nominate some Person of approved Wisdom, Loyalty, Diligence and Circumspection to represent Us in the character of Our Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary at Berne; Now Know Ye that We, reposing especial trust and confidence in the discretion and faithfulness of Our Trusty and Well-beloved Robert Spencer Isaacson, Esquire…appoint him the said Robert Spencer Isaacson to be Our Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary at Berne as aforesaid". Queen Elizabeth II (b. 1926) was coronated on February 6, 1952. She is the longest-reigning British monarch in history, having surpassed Queen Victoria in 2015. Richard Austin "Rab" Butler (1902-1982) was Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs when he signed this document. During his career, he served in three of the four "Great Offices of State" - Chancellor of the Exchequer (1951-1955), Foreign Secretary (1963-1964), and Home Secretary (1957-1962) - but never Prime Minister. Held in an ivory lacquer frame attached to antique silver etched frame, midnight blue moir fabric mat, color portrait photograph, engraved historical plate. Minor creases. Otherwise, fine condition. Framed in the Gallery of History style: 36½x23.
