QUEEN VICTORIA
Writing in German to her eldest daughter, Princess Victoria, now wife of Kaiser Frederick III, from Osborne House on the Isle of Wight, where the Royal Family had withdrawn in fear of the revolutions shaking Europe in 1848.
Autograph Letter signed: "VReg" meaning "Victoria Regina" or "Queen Victoria", 2 pages front and verso, 4½x7 black mourning paper, 4½x7¼. Osborne House [Isle of Wight], 1848 August 30. To "Beloved Victoria", in German, not translated. The Queen refers to a funeral, to reading Elgin's memoirs, and to a print of Copley's picture at Buckingham Palace. QUEEN VICTORIA (1819-1901) ascended to the throne on June 20, 1837 (her coronation ceremony was held the following year). She ruled the United Kingdom longer than any other monarch before or since. Her 63-year reign (1837 until her death in 1901) endeared her to her subjects, and she gave her name to an era, the Victorian Age. Her husband, Prince Albert, whom she married in 1840, was an able political figure himself, the Queen's close advisor until his death in 1861. The royal pair had nine children - four sons and five daughters. Victoria's reign was celebrated with two jubilees, honoring her 50 and 60 years on the throne. Britain was the world's greatest power during her reign, and she became Empress of India in 1877. By the time of her death, most of Europe's thrones were occupied by blood relatives of Victoria. The year 1848 saw revolutionary, nationalist and anti-monarchical revolutionary upheavals all over Europe. Louis Philippe, King of the French, had abdicated on February 16. Fearing Chartist and Irish Nationalist demonstrations in London might lead to revolution, Queen Victoria and her family temporarily withdrew to their estate at Osborne House, on the Isle of Wight, constructed as a summer residence between 1847 and 1851. The Queen's eldest daughter, Victoria, the Princess Royal (1840-1901) would later marry the Crown Prince of Prussia, who would rule as German Kaiser Frederick III - briefly - in 1888, dying in the year of his succession. Frederick, a liberal and an Anglophile, might have pursued very different policies than his successor, Kaiser Wilhelm II, the oldest of Frederick and Victoria's 8 children. It might seem unusual for the Queen to be writing to her 8 year-old daughter in a language other than English, but the highly intelligent Princess Victoria was rigorously schooled from an early age in French, German, and a wide array of subjects by a team of governesses. Queen Victoria died at Osborne House in 1901, in the arms of her grandson, Kaiser Wilhelm II, 7 months before the passing of her daughter Victoria. Her son and successor, King Edward VII, donated Osborne House to the nation. Edges and corners lightly worn and creased. Toned. Normal mailing folds. Faint staining on several pages. Last page missing section of bottom left corner. Lightly soiled. Otherwise, fine condition.
