Our Court at Saint James. Dated April 1, 1892. Also signed: "Salisbury" as Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs. 4½-inch diameter paper seal affixed at left margin to left of signature. On April 1, 1892, Queen Victoria signed this diplomatic appointment of attorney John Lowndes Gorst as Second-Secretary of Embassy or of Legation in any British Embassy abroad as necessary. Robert A. Cecil, 3rd Marquis of Salisbury (1830-1903), co-signed this appointment as Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs. Salisbury also served as Prime Minister for 13 years over three tenures with the Conservative Party. Queen Victoria (1819-1901) oversaw Great Britain at a time of great change. the British Empire grew even larger, stretching along the coast of the continent of Africa from Egypt to South Africa. The nation also experienced cultural and economic upheaval. Lightly creased with folds, not at signatures. Lightly soiled, minor type transference at lower margin. Otherwise, fine condition.
