QUEEN VICTORIA
She approves the request of Henry Thomas Lowry-Corry, First Lord of
the Admiralty, to commute the sentence of a Royal Marine and to punish him only
with loss of a year's seniority.
Manuscript Endorsement signed: "App'd/Victoria Reg" meaning
"Approved by Queen Victoria". 1 page, 4¼x12½. Admiralty House, London. 1867
September 16. Also signed "H Corry". In full: "Mr. Corry
with humble duty submits to Your Majesty the sentence of a Court Martial held at
the Royal Marine Barracks at Woolrich on the 10th September 1867 for the trial
of Lieutenant Robert Dundas Duncan Jervis, Royal Marines, first for being drunk
and disorderly and riding in a reckless manner along a footpath on Woolrich
Common and secondly for breaking his arrest. The prisoner was found fully and
honorably acquitted of the first charge, but found guilty of breaking his
arrest. For this offence he was sentenced to be cashiered, but the Court in
consideration of his youth and inexperience and of certain mitigating
circumstances in his case, earnestly recommended him for merciful consideration
In this recommendation Mr. Corry fully concurs, and most humbly submits to Your
Majesty that the sentence of cashiering be requited, but in the loss of one
year's seniority." Folded on verso with 3 red wax seals. QUEEN VICTORIA
(1819-1901) ascended to the throne on June 20, 1837 (her coronation ceremony was
held the following year). She ruled the United Kingdom longer than any
other monarch before or since, although Queen Elizabeth II, crowned in 1953,
may best that record. Victoria's 63-year reign (1837 until her death in
1901) endeared her to her subjects, and she gave her name to an era, the
Victorian Age. Her husband, Prince Albert, whom she married in 1840,
was an able political figure himself, the Queen's close advisor until his death
in 1861. The royal pair had nine children - four sons and five daughters.
Victoria's reign was celebrated with two jubilees, honoring her 50 and 60
years on the throne. Britain was the world's greatest power during her reign,
and she became Empress of India in 1877. By the time of her death, most of
Europe's thrones were occupied by blood relatives of Victoria. HENRY THOMAS
LOWRY-CORRY (1803-1873) was a Member of Parliament for County Tyrone from
1825 until his death. After serving in several other Admiralty offices, he
became First Lord of the Admiralty under Prime Ministers Derby and Disraeli
(1867-1868). Heavily soiled. Heavily toned. Surface creases. Corners worn
and creased. Faint stains on bottom half. Wax stamps on verso. Otherwise, fine
condition.
