QUEEN VICTORIA
Appointment of a Lieutenant of the 89th Regiment of Foot, a unit which would later bear the name of the Queen's eldest daughter, Princess Victoria. Also signed by Lord Panmure (later the Earl of Dalhousie) as Secretary of State for War.
Military Appointment signed: "Victoria Reg" meaning "Queen Victoria" in brown ink. Also signed "Panmure" as Secretary of State for War. 1 page, 14x9½. St. James Court, London, England. 1856 March 5. Appointment of 89th Regiment of Foot, effective from February 12. Despite the impressive size of his own family, with the death of King George III, the crown passed through his children in quick succession, first to his eldest son George IV (1820-1830), than to his third son William IV (1830-1837), and eventually to one of his more unlikely heirs, his granddaughter by his fourth son, Princess Victoria. QUEEN VICTORIA of the United Kingdom and the Empress of India (1819-1901) ascended the throne at the young age of 18, beginning the longest reign in British history and ruling over a time soon to be known as the Victorian Era. This time period was remembered for its industrial, cultural, political, scientific and military change within the United Kingdom with massive growth of the British Empire. More of a national icon rather than a direct political power, Victoria's name was synonymous with strict standards of personal morality. Her great affection for her husband, Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, remains a renowned love story in her history; they had nine children together, all married into royal and noble families across the continent, tying them together and earning her the nickname "Grandmother of Europe". Her reign lasted sixty-three years and seven months, and with her death so ended the House of Hanover in the British monarchy, and her legacy of her detailed correspondence and journals have displayed her previously unknown political straight-talking which was emotional, obstinate, and honest. Fox-Maule Ramsay (1801-1874), who had inherited the Scottish title of Lord Panmure in 1852, would become the 11th EARL OF DALHOUSIE in 1860. (Since his title was Scottish, not English, he served in the House of Commons, not Lords.) He was Secretary of State for War under Prime Ministers Russell (1846-1852) and Palmerston (1855-1858). Inheriting the Crimean War in its final year, he received considerable criticism for a conflict which, while won by Britain and its allies over Imperial Russia, exposed considerable military unpreparedness and ineptitude. The 89th Regiment of Foot, formed in 1779, fought in the Napoleonic Wars and the War of 1812. The Regiment would later be given the title, Princess Victoria's Own, in honor of Queen Victoria's eldest daughter (1840-1901), and also Empress of Germany for 99 days in1888. Multiple folds. Creased and toned. Edges and corners lightly worn. Otherwise, fine condition.
