QUEENA MARIO
Signed photograph of the opera soprano dressed in a white beaded gown
Photograph signed: "Queena Mario", in blue ink, Sepia 7x9. Early 1900's Opera soprano Queena Mario (1896-1951) studied under Polish soprano Marcella Sembrich before her debut with the San Carlo Opera Company in 1918. After touring for a number of years, Mario made her debut with the Metropolitan Opera in 1922, staying at the opera house for several years and over 300 performances. Roles during her time with the Met include Nedda in Leoncavallo's I Pagliacci, Gilda from Giuseppe Verdi's Rigoletto, Mimi in Puccini's La Boheme, and Sophie of Richard Strauss' Der Rosenvavalier. Mario had a lengthy and acclaimed opera career, and after her final performance at the met in 1938, went on to teach vocal classes at The Julliard School of New York and Philadelphia's Curtis Institute. She also received praise for her writing of several opera themed murder mysteries and a newspaper column, though both were written under different monikers than Queena Mario. Corners lightly worn and creased. Edges lightly worn. Light surface scratches and creases (not seen head on). Otherwise, fine condition.
