Photograph signed: "Kate Winslet" in blue felt tip, and "With best wishes/Geoffrey Rush" , in silver felt tip, color, 8x10. Quills is a period piece film that came out in 2000. Directed by Phillip Kaufman, it stars Kate Winslet, Geoffrey Rush (who was nominated for an Oscar for this role), Joaquin Phoenix and Michael Caine. The film is based on the play by Doug Wright, who also wrote the screenplay, and was inspired by the life of the Marquis de Sade, who was confined to an insane asylum at Charenton. Possessing a voluptuous, old-fashioned beauty that lends itself to costume dramas, British-born actress KATE WINSLET (b. 1975) has also been hailed for proudly standing in stark contrast to her more emaciated colleagues, proving that unconventional beauty and Hollywood success can indeed go hand in hand. She rocketed to major stardom when she played the romantic lead opposite Leonardo Di Caprio in the mega-blockbuster Titanic (1997). Nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance, Winslet became the youngest actress to garner her second Oscar nomination (she had previously been nominated for the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for Sense and Sensibility in 1995). Since that time, Winslet has been nominated for a Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for Iris(2001) and the Best Actress Oscar for Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004). In 2004, she also received critical acclaim for her performance in Finding Neverland. She won the 81st Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in The Reader. Australian actor GEOFFREY RUSH (b. 1951) won a Best Actor Oscar for Shine (1996), and was nominated for two more of the statuettes for Shakespeare in Love (1997) and Quills (2000). He scored an Emmy for the TV miniseries The Life and Death of Peter Sellers (2005). Among his other noteworthy performances have been as Francis Walshingham in Elizabeth (1997), Leon Trotsky in Frida (2002) and the villainous Captain Barbossa in the Pirates of the Caribbeanfilms (2003- ).
