R.B. ANDERSON. ALS: "R.B. Anderson", 1p, 5½x8½. Madison,
Wisconsin, 1896 October 12. Written vertically on ruled sheet to "My dear
Jno Thos. Lee". In full: "I am glad you take a deep interest in
literature and in autographs. I deem it an honor to get a place in the
distinguished company that you have gathered. Yours for pure literature,
good government and honest money Faithfully". Rasmus Björn Anderson
(1846-1936), who was called the "Sage of the Norse in America", taught
Scandinavian languages and literature at the University of Wisconsin for many
years. Also an author and diplomat, Anderson led the movement to honor Leif
Erikson with a U.S. holiday; his efforts led to a Lief Erikson day being
celebrated in his native Wisconsin as well as several other states. Anderson,
who had been born to Norwegian immigrants, served as U.S. Ambassador to
Denmark from 1885-1889. Lightly creased with folds, not at signature.
Slightly smudged at last name. Mounting remnants on verso lightly show through
at blank left and right margins. Fine condition.
